Unpopular Opinion: Indian Drivers Are Not Ready for High-Performance EVs Yet!
Green number plates, silent cabins, and 0–100 km/h times that once belonged exclusively to Italian exotics — the performance EV revolution in India is well underway. Mass-market brands and luxury carmakers alike are churning out dual-motor setups and punchy single-motor crossovers that put absurd amounts of horsepower within reach of regular buyers.
On paper, this democratisation of speed sounds fantastic. But in real-world Indian conditions, it is turning into a recipe for disaster. The hard truth nobody wants to acknowledge is this: most Indian drivers are simply not equipped to handle high-performance electric vehicles. We have spent decades mastering the forgiving, progressive power curves of naturally aspirated hatchbacks and turbocharged diesels. Swapping that muscle memory overnight for sub-5-second hyper-acceleration without proper orientation is why we are seeing a spike in avoidable EV crashes across our cities and highways.
The Muscle Memory Trap
To understand why this is happening, you have to look at what drivers are used to.
In a conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) car, speed builds linearly. You depress the accelerator, the engine spools up, gears shift, and torque builds progressively over several seconds. There is a built-in sensory buffer: the growl of the motor, mechanical vibrations, and gear changes all warn your brain that you are accelerating.
EVs eliminate that entire feedback loop.
Electric motors deliver 100% of their peak torque from 0 RPM in mere milliseconds. There is no build-up, no downshift, and no acoustic cue. The moment your foot presses down, the car does not gradually accelerate — it catapults forward.
When a driver graduating from a sedate 1.2-litre petrol hatchback steps into a 300 bhp electric crossover, their instincts fail them. In tight city traffic or during an overtaking manoeuvre on a state highway, tapping the throttle with the same force used on an ICE vehicle suddenly surges the car ahead with sports-car aggression. By the time the driver reacts, they are already into the back of a slow-moving auto-rickshaw or climbing a central divider.
Why The Crashes Are Different
This disconnect between driver expectation and vehicle behaviour is leading to very specific, dangerous accident patterns on Indian roads:
Panic Throttle at Low Speeds: When manoeuvring in parking lots, U-turns, or bumper-to-bumper jams, minor pedal misapplications that would cause a gentle stall in a manual ICE car result in immediate, violent surges into walls or storefronts.
Overestimating Braking Distance: EVs carry massive battery packs, making them 20% to 30% heavier than equivalent ICE platforms. Drivers hit 80 km/h twice as fast without realising the extra mass takes considerably longer to shed under hard braking.
Regenerative Braking Confusion: Abruptly lifting off the throttle with aggressive regenerative braking enabled can unsettle an inexperienced driver, causing erratic weight transfer or panic-stabs at the pedals when the deceleration catches them off guard.
Silent Speeding: Without engine noise to register velocity, drivers frequently underestimate how fast they are entering a corner or approaching a speed breaker until physics takes over.
Our road ecosystem — defined by stray animals, blind pedestrian crossings, and unpredictable lane changes — leaves almost zero margin for error. Adding instantaneous torque to that chaotic mix without adequate training is an outright hazard.

Let’s look at the current market spectrum. Even entry-to-mid segment EVs like the Tata Punch.ev and Nexon EV deliver instant torque figures that leave equivalent turbo-petrols trailing behind off the line. Step up to vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, or Volvo EX40, and you are dealing with machines producing north of 200–400 horsepower.
In an ICE vehicle, unlocking that calibre of performance required buying a focused performance car with stiff suspension, track-biased tyres, and an intimidating engine note that demanded respect from the driver.
High-performance EVs, however, deliver supercar-rivalling acceleration in a plush, whisper-quiet cabin with light steering and high ground clearance. It creates a false sense of security. Drivers feel invincible behind the wheel until the moment the rear loses traction or the front washes wide on uneven tarmac.
Why OEM Training Programs Are Non-Negotiable
We cannot simply expect buyers to self-correct their driving habits through trial and error. The learning curve is too steep, and the consequences on public roads are too high. This is where EV manufacturers in India must step in and take responsibility:
Mandatory Delivery Orientation: Handing over keys with a basic brochure is not enough. Showrooms must include mandatory practical sessions covering throttle modulation, dynamic weight transfer, and understanding torque curves.
Controlled Driving Clinics: OEMs should introduce closed-course training programs — similar to track days hosted by luxury brands — where buyers can safely experience emergency braking, electronic stability control limits, and rapid lane changes in a safe environment.
Staged Performance Unlocks: Brands could implement software locks or "Novice Modes" that cap instant torque delivery and top speed for the first 1,000 kilometres of ownership, allowing new owners to build muscle memory gradually before full output is made available.
Focus on Defensive EV Driving: Specific instruction on driving near pedestrians and two-wheelers who cannot hear an EV approaching, as well as mastering single-pedal driving techniques, should be standard curriculum.
Final Thoughts
Instant acceleration is addictive, and high-performance EVs are undeniably the future of automotive speed. But speed without skill is just an accident waiting to happen.
Until Indian drivers unlearn decades of ICE habits and manufacturers step up with comprehensive driver education, putting massive electric torque into untrained hands will continue to yield dangerous results. At the end of the day, having 400 horsepower under your foot means nothing if your reflexes are still stuck in a 70-horsepower world.
